More involvement of poor farmers in food security issues stressed

RANGPUR, Sept 10 (BSS): Enhanced participation of the extremely poor, small and marginalised farmers and fishermen in food security governance and policy-making process and issues can improve their livelihoods to ensure food security.

The views were expressed in a linkage workshop organised by the 'Participation of poor and marginalised farmers and fishermen and enhancing their influence in decision-making process on food security issues' project at Kawnia upazila parishad auditorium recently.

Kawnia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Syed Farhad Hossain attended and addressed the workshop as the chief guest with Project Officer of the project Afroza Sultana in the chair.

Kawnia Upazila Agriculture Officer Shamimur Rahman, Upazila Fisheries Officer Sanjoy Banerjee, Animal Resources Officer Dr ARM Al-Mamun and Editor of the Weekly 'Prottyashar Alo' Sarwar Alam Mukul addressed as special guests.

Filed level officials Sultana Afrin, Afroza Khatun and Ehsan Ali of the project, its beneficiaries Shabana Begum, Mukul and Dilip Kumar, also spoke. Thirty-five participants, including upazila level government and non-government officials, public representatives, project beneficiaries, civil society members and local journalists took part in the workshop.

The speakers elaborately narrated about the project, critical understanding of food governance and development of communication skills of small and marginalised farmers and fishermen, rights to food security and advocacy for attaining these rights.
