More land under jute cultivation this year in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, July 3 (BSS): The farmers of Jamalpur district have brought a vast area of land under jute cultivation in the current season as they were encouraged by fair price of jute last year.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said 46,095 hectares of land have been brought under jute cultivation this year which is 3,475 hectares more than the last year as farmers inspired by fair price of their product.

The production target of jute is expected to be 484,456 bells this year, the DAE sources said.

Four varieties of jute - local, Tosha, Kenaf, Mesta - are being cultivated in the district fixing production target.

The DAE office sources said, jute on 3,460 hectares in Jamalpur sadar upazila, 5,650 hectares in Sarishabari, 15,850 hectares in Islampur, 3,555 hectares in Melandah ,6,320 hectares in Dewanganj, 7,275 hectares in Madarganj and 3985 hectares in Bakshiganj have been sowed.

Md Abul Kashem, deputy director of the DAE, said farmers in the district have brought more land under jute cultivation this year as they got fair price of their product last year.

He added that the farmers might get bumper production of jute this year as weather is favourable.
