Muksudpur onion cultivators expect bumper production

GOPALGANJ, Feb 18: Onion farmers of Muksudpur upazila in the district are expecting a bumper production this season.
According to Muksudpur upazila DAE office sources, a total of 4,125 hectares of land have been brought under 'King' onion cultivation this season with the production target of 33,000 tonnes.
Around 6,000 farmers in the upazila are growing the onion, DAE sources said.
Farmer Hafizur Rahman Sheikh of Panchuria village under Pashargati union said he is growing King onion on six bighas of land. Growth of the plants is satisfactory amid a suitable weather. He expects 270 maunds of onion this season.
Omar Ali Sheikh, another farmer in Pashargati union, said he cultivated Thairpuri onion on three bighas of land this year spending Tk 75,000. He expects around 130 maunds of onion.
Sources said onion farmers of Muksudpur upazila are expecting a bumper production. King and Thairpuri are high-yielding variety and farmers can produce around 40 to 45 maunds of onion from a bigha of land, which market price is around Tk 70,000 to Tk 75,000.
DAE officials said Muksudpur upazila is well-known for farming of quality onion.
Md Slayman Hossain, sub-assistant agriculture officer of Pashargati, said farmers in the area show more interest in farming onion for good market price.
Ramesh Chandro Bramha, deputy director (Agriculture) of Gopalganj said, "We have taken a special initiative for expanding onion farming across the district.
The Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) provided quality seeds among the peasants to make the cultivation a success.
