Mustard cultivation heading for a bumper yield in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Jan 27: Mustard fields in Rangpur division have assumed an impressive yellowish look, pervading the air with sweet aroma of flowers.
The cultivation area of mustard exceeded the target this season for a congenial weather condition and supply of adequate inputs in proper time.
Farmers of eight districts under the division cultivated mustard on 55,284 hectares of land this season against the DAE's target of 52,749 hectares with the production target of 63,299 tonnes, official sources of DAE said. The charming yellow mustard flowers on a vast tract of lands of the region are captivating the beholders, making the cultivators optimistic of a bumper yield of the cash crop.
The farmers of the region have become enthusiastic about the cultivation of the crop in recent years due to easy farming process and lower production cost in comparison with other Robi crops, sources said.   
While visiting several areas of the region this FE correspondent found the crops matured and the lands filled with flowers presenting a captivating scenic beauty.
Rashidul (42), a farmer of Choupati area in Mithapukur Upazila in Rangpur said he cultivated mustard on one bigha of land this year spending Tk 2,800 only and is hopeful of achieving a good yield of the crop, if the weather remains favourable. "Cultivation of mustard needs only two-time irrigation while around Tk 2,500 to Tk 3,000 is required for cultivating the crop on one bigha of land, he also said.
Nizamuddin (45), a farmer of Chowdhuripara village at Taraganj Upazila in Rangpur district told The Financial Express that the cultivation of mustard is easier and less costly compared to other crops. He cultivated the crop on two bigha of his land this season and is hoping for a bumper output.  
Deputy Director of DAE Rangpur Feroz Ahmed said, adequate measures have been taken to ensure the supply of quality seeds, fertilisers and other agri-inputs to the farmers to enhance the production of the cash crop this year.


Works launched
A BSS report says: Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) and valiant freedom fighter Alhaj Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu launched road carpeting works at Baharkachhna (Ward No-7) and Chaorahat (Ward No-9) areas in the city Sunday.
The mayor launched the road carpeting works at two separate ceremonies under the ongoing phase-wise construction packages of 72 separate roads, drains, culverts etc at a cost of Taka 180 million in RCC area, official sources said.
