National sanitation month observed in Faridpur

FARIDPUR, Oct 11(BSS): National sanitation month was observed here sunday through holding rally and discussion meeting for creating awareness among the people to attain sanitation for all by 2013.
To mark the occasion, Directorate of Public Health Engineering (DPHE), district administration and BRAC jointly brought a colorful rally in the town participated. A discussion meeting followed the rally.
The discussion meeting on safe water and sanitation was held in Deputy Commissioner's conference room with ADC (Education) Arun Chandra Mohottom in the chair. Executive engineer of DPHE, Faridpur S.M. Wahidul Alam presented the keynote paper on the progress of sanitation in this district.
According to the paper, 3,21, 533 families out of the total 3,26,548 have been brought under sanitation coverage in 9 upazilas and 4 pourasabhas of the district. The percentage of coverage is 98 percent. Till 2003 only 1,26,629 families used sanitary latrines. BRAC Regional Manager Alauddin Ali in his speech pointed out that they in collaboration with DPHE and local government institutions have been carrying out extensive motivational work at all levels to create awareness among the people through BRAC WASH programme.
DC Helaluddin Ahmed spoke as the chief guest while the discussion was participated among others by Faridpur Pourasabha Mayor Sk. Mahatab Ali Methu, Decreer Char Union Chairman Sadequzzaman Milon Pal, Additional Police Super Subrata Kumer Halder.
