NAOGAON, May 16: Litchi growers in the district have started harvesting the popular fruit this week amid uncertainty over countrywide lockdown and comparatively low prices in the markets.

Wholesalers are not buying the fruit straight from the farmers' orchards and they are also not crowding the markets. Sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said litchi was cultivated on 983 hectares of land in the district this year.

The official target of production of the fruits has been set at 8,815 tonnes this season, the sources added.
