Natore witnesses white revolution through bumper yield of garlic

NATORE, Apr 28 (BSS): A white revolution of garlic cultivation has taken place in the district through its bumper yield in the current season as the highest 30 per cent of garlic of the country was produced in the district.

The estimated value of the garlic production in the district is around Taka 20 billion (2,000 crore).

Farmers of the district have completed harvesting garlic from the land and now they are busy in processing and preserving those in a proper way.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said in the current season the total cultivated area of garlic in 64 districts under 14 agricultural regions of the country is 77,900 hectares while the total garlic production in the country is 6,90,900 tonnes.

On the other hand, garlic has been cultivated on 22,855 hectares of land in Natore, the highest 30 per cent of the total cultivated land in the country.

A total of 2,15,000 tonnes of garlic have been produced in the district during the current season and the farmers of the district are happy getting bumper garlic output.

The DAE office said both-- the cultivated area and the production of garlic in the district-- have increased gradually in recent years. In 2023, garlic was cultivated on 16,745 hectares of land and produced 1,48,257 tonnes. The following year, in 2024, 1,58,201 tonnes of garlic were produced from 18,005 hectares of land.

Although the target of garlic cultivation was set on 18,200 hectares of land in the district during the current Rabi season, it was cultivated on 22,855 hectares of land exceeding the target.

Most of the garlic in the district is produced in Gurudaspur and Baraigram upazilas. Of the 22,855 hectares of cultivated land in the district, Baraigram upazila has the highest area of 8,993 hectares while 7,375 hectares in Gurudaspur, 2,880 hectares in Natore Sadar and 1,100 hectares in Lalpur, 1,076 hectares in Bagatipara, 1,05 hectares in Singra and 426 hectares in Naldanga upazila.

Garlic collection from the land has been completed in the district. Garlic farmer Tofazzal Hossain of Tirail village in Baraigram upazila has cultivated garlic on one bigha of land this season.
