Need for proper epilepsy management emphasised

RAJSHAHI, May 13 (BSS): Speakers at a scientific seminar here today emphasised the need for proper management and update of epilepsy commonly known as Mrigy as the number of patients suffering from the disease is gradually increasing due to various natural and manmade catastrophic reasons in the country.

They clarified that epilepsy is a disorder of the brain that is characterised by an enduring predisposition to generate seizures and by its neurobiological, cognitive, psychological and social consequences.

Department of Pediatrics of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) organized the seminar titled "Epilepsy overview and management update" held at Cookie Jar Chinese restaurant in Rajshahi city.

Director of Rajshahi Shishu Hospital Prof Dr AB Siddiqui, Prof Dr Iqbal Bari and Prof Asgar Hossain of the department of Pediatrics addressed the inaugural session as guests of honour with Prof Dr Sanaul Haque, Head of department of Pediatrics, in the chair.

During his keynote paper presentation styled "Epidemiology, Aetiology and Clinical Management of Epilepsy in Bangladesh: A Systematic Review" Prof Dr Belal Uddin of department of Pediatrics, said prevalence of epilepsy in developing countries like Bangladesh is higher than developed countries.

The main causes behind the disease are head injuries, cerebrovascular disease, Central Nervous System infections and birth trauma.

He mentioned that there have been significant advances in the understanding of the epidemiology of epilepsy in the country during last around two decades. The median lifetime prevalence rate is estimated to be six per 1000 people, which is lower than in other developing regions.
