Net loss of Jhenidah PBS stands at Tk 10.32m last fiscal

JHENIDAH, Jan 30: Annual report of fiscal year (FY) 2012-13 of Jhenidah Palli Biddyut Samity recently showed loss of nearly Tk. 20 million in the sectors of distribution cost, customers' service, maintenance cost, administration and general expenditure and long term credit with interest.
The report which was submitted by Md. Mizanur Rahman, treasurer of Jhenidah Palli Biddyut Samity, in the organization's 18th annual members meeting, expressed the data of the loss.
Ad Abdul Wahed Zoardar, administrator of Jhenidah Zela Parishad, attended the meeting as chief guest, held in the field of Jhenidah Palli Biddyut Samity with its parting president Md. Nasir Uddin in the chair.
The meeting was also attended, among others, by AFM Fazlul Kadir, Deputy Director of Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board, Jhenidah Press Club president M Saiful Mabud, General Secretary Nizam Uddin Zoardar, Jhenidah municipality mayor Saidul Karim Mintu, law adviser Ad Abu Taleb, director Golam Rasul, officials, employees and hundreds of consumers of the samity.
In the report Tk. 527.9 million was shown as maintenence income during a year. On the other hand, total expenditure in electricity service sector was shown Tk. 547.5.
Depreciation of property was shown Tk. 74.07.
The report showed net loss of Tk. 13.23 million.
In the report of Jhenidah Palli Biddyut Samity's General Manger (GM), it was mentioned that 126306 m consumers from 872 villages of six upazilas, were given connections up to June, 2013. By this time the total amount of electrified lines including establishment of 172 kilometres new ones stood at 3536 kilometres.
J C Poul, General Manager (GM), Jhenidah Palli Biddyut Samity told The Financial Express that since the launching of the Palli Biddyut Samity, it has been a losing concern. He attributed the loss to higher rate of purchase than sale rate of the electricity by the samity, adding that they sell per unit electricity at Tk 3.84 and Tk 3.85 for irrigation and residential connections respectively while it is purchased at Tk. 4.27 a unit which stands at nearly Tk 5.00 with maintenance cost.
