NETRAKONA, July 19: Netrakona district town has yet to get a road network perfectly all right even though 138 years have already gone by since it came into existence.
The road from Satpai level crossing to Chankhar More in the town is worn out with innumerable potholes developing here and there.
As a result, movement of vehicles and pedestrians is hardly possible on the tattered stretches of the road.
Due to the dilapidated condition of the roads, the townspeople are suffering a lot.
The big potholes that have developed on the important roads are inconveniencing movement of the commuters in the town for lack of proper connectivity with Purbadhala Road.
Besides the roads, the Water Development Board pubbo building and the mosque are facing constant problems for the pilgrims.
It is learnt, Netrakona municipality was established in 1887.
Even after long 138 years, the townspeople are not getting required civic services from the municipality.
Even though Netrakona municipality has been promoted to the first-class municipality, conscious people feel that Netrakona has not been developed as a planned municipality due to lack of far-reaching planning by the authorities concerned.
Despite the multifold increase in population and vehicles, the municipal authorities could not construct roads in a planned way.
There is no road to enter Moktarpara area of Nagra river Bridge .
Besides, the roads and alleys of the first-class municipality are narrow and there is not enough space for towing vehicles at Teri Bazar intersection.
Auto-rickshaws mostly occupy the roads of the town.
It has been seen that for want of renovation or repair work, bitumen in many parts of the roads is getting damaged and big potholes have developed at different places.
Condition of the roads becomes far more deplorable due to accumulation of water during monsoon.
In addition, the roads in Chankhar More and Jayanagor, Malni Road, Islampur Road and Abu Abbas Road in the district town are lying in a deplorable state of for want of maintenance and repair.
Journalist Jahangir Alam Sajal, who is also a local resident, said the roads have not been renovated for a long time, and large potholes have been created at various places.
"To rid the people of sufferings, I demand that the roads be repaired immediately and drains be constructed," he said.
Auto-rickshaw driver Kalam, a resident of Satpai, said he drives his vehicle every day with risk of meeting an accident.
The roads mostly remain covered with big potholes and water; and consequently no vehicles can ply them easily.
Commissioner Chitra Ranjan Sarkar of Ward No 01 of Netrakona municipality said tender process for repair work of the roads will start soon.
