CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Sept 20 (BSS): The newly constructed second bridge over the river Mohananda at Shaheberghat area will change the life of about 0.5 million people of seven unions of sadar upazila.
The Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) constructed the bridge at a cost of Taka 497.9 million and it is likely to be opened to traffic in November this year. Md. Abdul Wadud, lawmaker of Sadar constituency said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of the bridge on April 23, 2011 and it is expected that the prime minister would inaugurate the bridge.
More than 0.5 million people of seven remote char unions named Islampur, Devinagar, Charbagdanga, Shahjahanpur, Alatuli, Narayanpur and Sundarpur of Sadar upazila remained isolated from the upazila and district headquarters due to the river obstruction.
The people of these unions had been demanding a bridge over the river Mohananda and this government took the initiative to construct the bridge, the lawmaker added.
He also informed that there are 85 government and non-government primary schools, 20 high schools, 10 dakhil madrashas, two colleges and a number of NGO offices in the char areas.
