Newly-harvested maize starts appearing in Nilphamari mkt

NILPHAMARI, May 03: Newly-harvested maize has started appearing in local markets of the district as harvesting of the crop is going on in full swing. A vast tract of sandy char land was brought under the farming of maize.

New maize is being sold at Tk 600 per maund in the local market.

Maize cultivation is profitable. It is the main ingredient in making cattle feed, tasty snack 'pop corn' is made from crop. Moreover corn flour is also used in making bread. Stalks of the plant are used as fuel.

Farmer Abdur Rahman of Khoga Khoribari union under Dimala upazila, said he cultivated maize on one acre of land and got a yield of 70 maunds.

The cultivators expressed the hope of making a profit of Tk 35,000 this season.

DAE source said 6,458 hectares of land were brought under the farming of maize with the production target of 46,822 tonnes.
