Two held with 12 gold bars at HSIA
Armed Police Battalion (APBn) arrested two persons with 12 pieces of gold bars in two separate special operations at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Wednesday and on Thursday, reports BSS. The detainees are- Firuz Mia, 39, and Md Billal, 50. The current market value of the seized gold (weighing 1.3 kg) is around Tk 12.5 million, the APBn officials said. APBn Additional Superintendent of Police SM Mizanur Rahman said acting on tip-off, raids were conducted in the parking area of Canopy-1 on Thursday around 7:30am and in the car-parking area of Canopy-2 of the airport on Wednesday around 12:30pm to catch Firuz and Billal.Two separate cases were filed against them under the Special Powers Act at the Airport Police Station. Later, they were handed over to the police, the APBn official added. — BSS
11 businesses gutted in Bhola fire
At least 11 business establishments were gutted in a fire at Ilisha Junction Bazar in Sadar upazila of Bhola district in the early hours of Thursday. Md Sumon, station officer of Bhola Sadar Fire Service and Civil Defense, said the fire broke out around 2:30 am at a shop and spread soon. On information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze after one and half an hour. Eleven shops including machinery parts shop, fast food shop, TV-refrigerator shop, workshop, pharmacy, furniture shops and others gutted in the fire Shop owners claimed that the fire caused them losses of Tk 30 million. However, it is still not clear what caused the fire. — BSS
Three held over robbing liquor, money in DB guise
The Detective Branch (DB) arrested three men, including a bKash distributor sales officer, over stealing foreign liquor and money allegedly in the guise of DB police from Rajbari Sadar and Baliakandi upazila on Tuesday night. The arrestees are Munna Mallick, son of Abdul Motaleb Mallik of Aladipur Mallickpara in Rajbari Sadar upazila, Sultan Ahmed Shanto, son of Billal Molla of Narayanpur village in Baliakandi upazila and Tushar Mondal, son of Zahed Mondal of Gobindapur village. According to police, Munna Mallick is the mastermind of the gang and he is a Distributor Sales Officer (DSO) of bKash in Rajbari district. Officer-in-charge of Rajbari District DB Moniruzzaman said three people were arrested following the complaint. Another person named Rana is absconding. The victim, Santu Nandi, filed a case with Rajbari Sadar thana in this connection, he added. — BSS
Farmer electrocuted in Satkhira
A farmer died after being electrocuted in Bakchara area under Sadar upazila of Satkhira on Thursday. The farmer is Yakub Ali (50), hailed from the area. Local people said Yakub was electrocuted around 9:00 am while thrashing paddy by an electric motor. He was rushed to Satkhira Sadar Hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Satkhira Sadar thana Abu Jihad Md Fakrul Alam confirmed the matter. — BSS
Life-term fugitive convict arrested in Feni
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a fugitive convict who was sentenced to life-term imprisonment in a murder case filed in 1993 with Chhagalnaiya thana in the district. The convict Abul Khair (65) was arrested from Chattogram on Wednesday night, Senior Assistant Director (Media) of RAB-7 Md Nurul Abser said this a press briefing. According to the RAB official, Abul Khair killed his elder brother Abu Taher over land dispute with the help of his another brother Abdul Qader at Dakhin Ballavpur village under Chhalnaiya upazila on June 27, 1993. Following the murder, Taher's sister filed a case accusing Abul Khair and Abdul Qader. Justifying witnesses and evidences, a court in Feni sentenced Abul Khair and Abdul Qader to life-term imprisonment in their absence — BSS
Five kg heroin seized in C'nawabganj
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized five kilograms of heroin from Sonamasjid frontier in Shibganj upazila of the Chapainawabganj on Wdnesday. A special patrol team of BGB-59 Battalion, led by its Commanding Officer (CO) Lieutenant Colonel Golam Kibria, conducted a raid in Tahakhana area about 150 yards inside of Bangladesh territory around 8.45 pm and chased two motorcyclists, prompting them flee away. They left a motorcycle and a bag, BGB sources said. After searching the bag, BGB found the heroin, the sources added.
