11 houses gutted

in Nilphamari fire

NILPHAMARI, Jan 24: At least 11 houses were gutted in a devastating fire in Sadar upazila here on Friday night. The fire broke out at around 09:00 pm on Friday at Patwari Para village under Itakhola union of the upazila. The victims are now living under the open sky in inhumane conditions. Eyewitnesses said the fire originated from the house of Dulal Roy and spread rapidly to nearby houses. As a result, homes, furniture and stored foods belonging to other families were completely destroyed. Two cows owned by Pratima Roy were also killed in the blaze.— BSS

Three drug peddlers held

SHERPUR, Jan 24 (BSS): Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three alleged drug peddlers along with 1,300 bottles of foreign liquor during an operation in Sadar upazila here on Friday night. The RAB team set up a check post in Moksedpur Nayapara area along the Sherpur-Jamalpur highway at around 8:30 pm. Acting on secret information, RAB members signaled a suspicious truck to stop at the check post. — BSS
