NILPHAMARI, Feb 13: Groundnut cultivation is increasing in the district.
Sources said groundnut farming is new here. Farmers of the char areas have started growing the crop due to high market demand. A vast tract of charland in Dimla and Jaldhaka upazila has been brought under the production of groundnut.
DAE sources said around 918 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the crop to produce 1,525 tonnes of output. The department is providing necessary support to the peasants.
While contacted Akhtar Alam, farmer of Itakhola union under Sadar upazila said he cultivated groundnut in 60 decimal of land in this year and he is expecting to get 16 maunds of the crop as the plants has grown excellently. He said existing market price of groundnut is Tk 4,000 per maund and he would be able to sale those at a total price of Tk 60,000 or around this amount, while his total cost was Tk 15,000. He said harvest would begin within a month or so.
Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Ajmal Hossain said groundnut farming is profitable. Easy farming process and low production cost encourage the growers to enhance the cultivation of the popular crop.
