A lesser number of temporary cattle markets is likely to be set up in Sylhet district for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha this year than last year; and sales of sacrificial animals have already started in the markets of Gaibandha district with participation of traders from far and near.
Our correspondent from Sylhet reports: A total of 60 temporary cattle markets will be set up in Sylhet city and outside for the Eid-ul-Azha this year, down from 74 in the Eid last year.
The Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) authorities have invited tenders for the lease of five temporary cattle markets in the city. In addition, inquiries are being made about 55 markets in Sylhet district. Of these, at least eight markets can be set up in Sylhet Sadar upazila, said sources in the district administration and SCC. Centring Eid-ul-Azha, the entire city turns into a cattle hub every year, with setting up of a large number of permanent and makeshift markets.
The authorities said that there will be held no unauthorised cattle markets beyond the designated ones this time.
According to the district administration, information is being gathered about setting up 55-60 temporary market places in 13 upazilas and four municipalities of Sylhet district on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha this year.
Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Md. Sarwar Alam said the number and locations of the cattle markets to be set up for Eid-ul-Azha will be decided within next couple of days.
The upazila administration will open the markets after completing the lease process for those in their respective areas.
The market activities may start by May 20,
according to the sources concerned.
According to SCC, the city has invited tenders for five temporary cattle markets on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
The notification in this regard, published on Monday (May 11), was signed by Chief Revenue Officer of the city corporation, Biswajit Deb.
The five temporary cattle markets are empty field adjacent to South Surma Central Truck Terminal, New Tukerbazar (empty area adjacent to Temukhi), empty field adjacent to Abdul Latif Primary School in Suburban Mirapara, empty area adjacent to Shahparan Bazar and the asphalt field of Tetli owned by Sylhet City Corporation.
The SCC authorities last year gave permission for temporary markets at 12 places in the city and this time they have reduced the number to seven.
SCC officials said that the number of temporary markets has been reduced this time as the ownership of the privately-run Kazirbazar cattle market has come to the city corporation.
Last year, 62 temporary cattle markets were approved in Sylhet district. Out of these, 10 temporary markets were set up in Sylhet sadar upazila.
However, Sylhet Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Khoshnur Rubaiyat hinted that the number of cattle markets in the upazila would be reduced this time.
Our correspondent from Gaibandha reports: Sales of sacrificial animals have already begun in the markets of Gaibandha district with around 10 days left for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
A total of 176,033 animals have been prepared in Gaibandha district ahead of the second biggest religious festival of the Muslims, said sources at the District Livestock Office.
This time, there is a demand for 137,500 sacrificial animals in seven upazilas of the district. ?However, there are 29,867 animals surplus beyond the demand. ?The sacrificial animals in the stock include cows, buffaloes, goats, and sheep. There are also markets online for selling these animals locally. Sales of these sacrificial animals have already started.
Meanwhile, the farmers and ranchers of the district are in trouble due to the abnormal increase in the prices of cow feed. They are doubtful whether they would get the fair prices for their animals after feeding them high-priced feed.
Gaibandha Sadar Upazila Animal Resources Officer Tarun Kumar Datta told the Financial Express that this time 31,211 animals have been kept ready in the upazila.
Of them, 6,962 are bulls, 467 bullocks, 4,092 cows, 19 buffaloes, 18,415 goats, and 1,256 are sheep. Farmers have been warned not to use steroid-like drugs to fatten any animal.
Since a heat wave is continuing, these animals may suffer from various diseases including heat stroke. That is why medical services are being provided all the time.
Gaibandha District Livestock Officer Dr. Abdur Razzak told the Financial Express that this time there is a demand for 1,37,500 sacrificial animals in seven upazilas of the district and 1,76,033 animals have been kept ready against the requirement.
