Farmers are earning healthy profit from the commercial farming of the vegetable, officials said, adding, the cultivation should be popular in the twelve upazilas of the district.

"I have cultivated off-season bean on 12 decimals of land spending Tk 2,200," said farmer Tofazzal Hossain under Sherpur upazila.

"I have already started harvesting the item and selling in the local market", the cultivator added.

More than 200 hectares of land have been brought under off-season bean cultivation in the district aiming to achieve 210 tonnes of yield.

The peasants generally sow the seed on high land in the end of February and the vegetable can be harvested in the middle of April. The harvest will continue in May.

One maund of off-season bean is selling at Tk 2,200 to Tk 2,300 in the retail market and Tk 1,800 to Tk 1,900 in the wholesale market.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said to grow a maund of off-season bean, a farmer spends around Tk 600 to Tk 900 but sells at Tk 1800.
