Okra production bright in Bogra

BOGRA, July 15: The farmers are expecting a satisfactory production of okra as the climatic conditions and agri- imputs are favourable in Bogra district including 12 upazilas this season.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said that around 2500 hectares of land have been brought under okra cultivation this season as it has proved more profitable for the farmers.

Specially, the landless and marginal farmers of Sariakandi, Sonatola and Gabtoly upazilas have brought vast tracts of the sandy char lands under okra cultivation.

Mahir Uddin of Gunaher village under Dupchanchia upazila said, "The agriculture department and NGOs have provided quality seeds, necessary agri-inputs and arranged a successful trainings programme for the farmers."

Kamrul Hossain, son of Wazul of Dawakola village under sadar upazila said, "I have cultivated 0.14 acre of land under okra cultivation without spraying insecticides spending Tk 2300 and I expect Tk 5000 profit from the cropland."

"I attended a training programme arranged by Department of Agriculture Extension on how to cultivate okra easily." he added. Per kilogram of okra is being sold with Tk 20 to 30 in the local kitchen market.
