RAJSHAHI, Jan 15: One more frontier haat (border market) is being set up at Barinagar under Char Asriadaha union in Godagari upazila soon.
It is learnt, on December 26 last year, a frontier meeting between the Deputy Commissioners of Rajshahi district and Nadia district of West Bengal was held at Krishnanagar of Nadia where Meshbahuddin Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi proposed for setting up a frontier haat. On his proposal both countries agreed to set up a frontier haat at Barinagar under Char Asariadaha union of Godagari upazila of Rajshahi district.
According to sources, already a proposal to set up the frontier haat has been placed to the Ministry of Commerce from Godagari Upazila Office. On the other hand, a proposal has also been sent from the Office of Murshidabad District Office to the Ministry of Commerce of West Bengal to set up the haat.
It is further gathered, aiming at setting up the haat, Indian authorities have started to repair the road of Saadampara of Asariadaha village connecting Barinagar.
Golam Mostafa, Chairman of Char Asriadaha union, informed there will be a great opportunity for farmers to sell agricultural products and commodities produced in Char Asariadaha and other places of Rajshahi district. Such a step will develop the economic condition of the people of the region, he stated.
It is learnt, after construction of barbed wire fencing along 200-yard of Indian border, connection with people of Lalgola and Bhagabangola of India with the people of Char Asriadaha remained suspended.
Ataur Rahman, former Union Parishad member of Char Naoshera village informed, being unable to travel to the mainland by traversing through remote char areas across the Padma, people of Char villages under Char Asariadaha union used to purchase their commodities from the markets of Lalgola and Bhagabangola of India. But, the border being sealed with barbed wire fencing, char people were travelling to Godagari Upazila sadar or to Bidirpur haat by traversing a long distance on feet and on boats.
Godagari Upazila Officer (In charge) Alamgir Kabir informed, district administration of Rajshahi has taken up steps to start a frontier haat at Barinagar considering the problems of the people of char villages.
The haat will be inaugurated as soon as the ministries of commerce of both countries approve the proposal.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) and Godagari Upazila Officer have already visited the spot of the frontier haat at Barinagar.
