Only one doctor runs gynae department in Sunamganj hospital

SYLHET, Sept 16: Medicare service at the Gynae department of Sunamganj district town's 250-bed hospital is being hampered seriously as only one has to manage things against 5 posts of physicians.
The lone female physician has to see all the things in the outdoor as well as the indoor patients, which is almost impossible, sources said.
Besides, 35 to 50 patients remain admitted almost every day although there are only 17 beds. The others have to set beds on the floor, as there is no alternate arrangement, insiders said.
The Gynae department has 05 posts of Consultant, Resident Surgeon, Junior Consultant, Indoor Medical Officer and Assistant Registrar whereas only a Junior Consultant has to shoulder everything, an official admitted, this is why the sufferings of the patients go huge.
A female patient said, 'I don't know whether it would be possible for me to consult the physician as the queue is a long while she has to go the ward patients too'.
Junior Consultant in the busy hospital's Gynae department Lipika Das said regularly more than double patients remain admitted although there is only 17 beds. I have to see all these patients every day, after doing the other jobs in the department. Also I have to prescribe about 20 to 25 patients on the outdoor, she added.
Number of cesarean section had also gone up in the hospital. Sixty six cesarean sections were done in 2017 where it was 427 in 2018. The figure is already 299 as yet this year, she added.
The Resident Medical Officer of the Hospital Rafiqul Islam said only a Junior Consultant in the Gynae department can't shoulder all the important jobs since the pressure of patient is on rise day by day. The matter had already been brought to the notice of the higher authorities, but there had been no step as yet, he added,
