Overproduction of lady\\\'s finger leads to drop in price in Magura market

MAGURA, May 21: A bumper production of lady's finger has failed to bring smile on the faces of Magura farmers. Low price of lady's finger has faded the smile of the farmers in Magura.
Magura Agriculture Extension Department (DAE) informed, a total of 1400 hectares of land has been brought under lady's finger cultivation in the district this year. Farmers were expecting 18050 tonnes lady's finger as production.
Baten Mian, a farmer of village Gangnalia under Magura sadar upazila said, the production cost of per bigha lady's finger has stood at Tk 1400 this year as against Tk 1200 last year. On the other hand lady's finger is being sold at Tk 300 to Tk 350 per maund as against Tk 1300 to Tk 1400 last year. Production cost of the vegetable has increased while price of it has decreased sharply.
Hasan Ali, a farmer of village Ramnagar under Magura sadar upazila said, "I cultivated lady's finger in 3 bighas of land. I have got Tk 3500 by selling my lady's finger while my production cost was more than Tk 4000. My earning does not cover even my production cost." litan1968@gmail.com
