Owners fattening cattle using toxic drugs

RAJSHAHI, Sept 1: Many cattle farm owners of the district were fattening cows by using toxic drugs. Consumption of meat of those fattened cattle may be fatal for human bodies.
Still for getting a quick profit, a section of dishonest cattle farm owners were engaged in fattening cows. Especially, as the day of Eid-ul-Azha is approaching, the practice of fattening the cows and buffalos has been increased by the cattle farmers.
It is learnt, in nine upazilas of Rajshahi district there are at least 10,000 large and small cattle farms, each holding 5 to 30 cattle. Almost in all those farms cattle are being fattened through using steroid drugs like Pre-Dexanol, Dexamethasone, Betamethasone, Periactin, Paradexon and Oradexon. All those drugs have serious side effects for human bodies and some of those drugs also used for curing diseases like Asthma and suffocation for men. Excessive consumption of those drugs may also cause serious effects for human bodies, even death.
Moreover, ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, a section of seasonal cattle farmers were fattening cows at the cattle sheds of their houses by using toxic drugs and injections.  It is alleged, Department of Livestock (Animal Resources) at the upazilas were not taking any action against any of the dishonest cattle farm owners for using harmful steroid drugs and injection for fattening cattle.  
The department has not yet held any meeting, seminars or even court-yard meetings with the cattle farm owners to apprise them about the harmful effect of using those steroid drugs and injections and possible fatal consequences of consuming of meat of those animals by human beings.
It is further learnt, the harmful steroid drugs and injections are also being sold unabated in shops in front of Upazila Livestock Hospital and even in all haats and markets of the upazilas.
Members of RAB-5, Rajshahi, however, arrested two traders at Mondumala Bazaar under Tanore upazila with 16,500 pieces of banned drugs used for fattening cows.
Dr. Saiful Islam, Animal Resource Officer of Godagari upazila informed, he never suggests any cattle farm owner to fatten their cattle heads by consuming those any drugs or injections. Rather he organised regular court yard meetings with the cattle farm owners of the upazila to make them aware of fatal consequences of fattening of cows.
He further informed, due to consumption of toxic drug, water is deposited inside the body of cow and the kidney and the liver of the cow ultimately lost its function and it does not survive long.
Dr. Hossan Ali, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer of Godagari informed, by consuming meat of fattening cow or buffalo, a man runs the risk of being attacked with various incurable diseases.
