Pabna cultivator achieves success growing Saudi date

PABNA, Nov 20: A farmer in the district has achieved success farming Saudi date on an experimental basis.

Farmer Abdul Jalil Hossain at Bollovpur village in Handial union of Pabna Sadar upazila said he started farming Saudi date in 2012.

He spent around Tk 60,000 to meet the cost of seed, fertilisers and pesticides.

The grower said, "All of the date plants in my orchard are now bearing fruits. I am taking a good care of them so that a good yield can be achieved."

Seeing the success of Abdul Jalil, a good number of farmers have already sown the seeds of Saudi date at their homesteads and orchards according to the suggestion of the officials at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).

Some locals said, "It is interesting that the famous Marium date is now growing in our land."

Each kg of Marium date is sold at Tk 800 to Tk 900 in the retail market while Tk 700 to Tk 750 in the wholesale markets across the region.

Upazila agriculture officer Hasan Rashid Hossainy said to make the farming a grand success, the DAE is providing all sorts of support.

The environment as well as soil of the region is suitable to cultivate Saudi date, he added.

Deputy Director of DAE Md Azaher Ali said the Saudi date cultivation gains momentum across the district as its cultivation is proved to the farmers as more lucrative compare to other fruits.

"We encourage the farmers to expand the cultivation of the delicious fruit to boost production across the country", he added.
