Pabna experiences a bumper garlic production

PABNA, Apr 3: There has been a bumper production of garlic in all nine upazilas of Pabna in the current season. Growers are happy with the present prices of the produce and earning profit from the farming.

Johurul Islam, Liton Mandal, Shahad Hossain and Anwarul Islam, all garlic growers at village of Narayanpur in Pabna Sadar Upazila said this year they cultivated Lalpur and Faridpur varieties of garlic on their lands and achieved a bumper production.

Garlic production this year is more than 20-25 maunds per bigha of land. The average price of one maund of garlic is over Tk 1,700 to Tk 1,900. It is selling at Tk 47 per kg in the market. The production cost including seeds and other inputs has been estimated at Tk 22,000 to Tk 23,000. The produce are selling per bigha of land at over Tk 42,000 to Tk 43,000 and profit per bigha at Tk 20,000 to Tk 23,000.

Favourable climatic condition and supply of seeds, fertilisers and other inputs were adequate in the market this year, farmers said.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said though the department targeted to cultivate garlic on a total of 5121 hectares of land in the 9 upazilas of the district this season, the growers brought 6105 hectares of land under cultivation expecting a favourable climatic conditions.
