PABNA, Mar 14: Farmers in nine upazilas of Pabna are very happy over good garlic (locally name white gold) production this year and they are getting fair prices of the most consumed-spice in the country.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) had a target of cultivating garlic on 5,857 hectares of land here, but exceeding the target garlic was cultivated on 6,887 hectares and 38,376 tonnes of garlic were produced. About 5,731 hectares of land were brought under garlic farming last year.
Of the cultivated land, 725 hectares were brought under garlic cultivation in Bera upazila with a production target of 4,749 metric tonnes, 529 hectares in Santhia upazila with a target of 3,465 metric tonnes, 950 hectares in Sujanagar upazila with a production target of 6,223 metric tonnes while 470 hectares in Pabna Sadar upazila with a production target of 3,079 metric tonnes, 725 hectares in Atghoria upazila with the target of 4,749 metric tonnes, 327 hectares in Iswardi upazila with a target of 2,142 metric tonnes, 757 hectares in Chatmohor upazila with the target of 4,958 metric tonnes while 740 hectares in Bhangura upazila with a target of 4,847 metric tonnes, and 632 hectares in Faridpur upazila with a target of 4,140 metric tonnes.
The farmers of Dulai, Uthulia, Hatkhali and Raninagar in Sujanagar upazila of the district told The Financial Express they did not get expected price of paddy and jute last year.
Moreover, foggy and cold weather damaged Robi crops that compelled farmers towards cultivating garlic on more lands than the target.
