PABNA, Sept 17: Most of the schools and colleges of Pabna town and remote areas are failing to properly monitor the activities of their students during school and college hours. Instead of spending time in classes or studying, certain students are seen dating, smoking or idling away their time.

As a result, parents have become worried about their wards and the roles of schools in providing quality education. There are five schools and two degree level colleges in the area that maintain minimum quality standards.

These are Government Girls school, Govternment Boys School, Islamia Collage and Imam Gazzali school and College, and Government Women's College.  Thousands of students study here.

But it is alleged that most of the institutions are failing to maintain minimum standard of teaching and education while the students are simply idling away their time. During school hours, a large number of boys and girls are found in different parks, riversides, cyber centres, garden area and other places.

College and schoolboys and girls are openly using expensive mobile phones even in the classrooms. They even share porn movies saved in their mobile phones. Schoolboys were found to be passing their time outside the compound and smoking while playing cards. Some students claimed that teachers of their institutions were not attentive in the classes. They did not even call out roll in the classroom.

As long as the students went to the teachers for private tuition, the teachers could care less, the students alleged. Aside from completely diregarding school rules, the students would often disappear completely from school premises and go out on dates during school hours. Apparently all this happen right under the nose of school teachers who turn a blind eye.

After hearing the news from the journalists, superintendent of police Alamgir Kabir ordered police forces to keep an eye on students who are out playing hockey. He said that unruly and ill-disciplined students often are a source of potential crimes.  He further said that if any student was found bunking classes without the permission of teachers or guardians, they would be arrested and hauled back to the school.
