Pariza paddy farming getting popular in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Aug 12 (BSS): Farming of Pariza paddy, an indigenous variety, is getting popularized to the farmers of the district year after year as the growers are earning economical profit from the cultivation.
According to RDRS Bangladesh, a reputed non-governmental organisation started motivating the farmers here to farm the pariza paddy on high and medium high land in 2009.
The objective of the pariza paddy farming was to help the farmers get additional crop during the off season between Boro and Aman seasons side by side with achieving the country's food security.
To create working opportunities to the farm day labours during the lean period and help them pass their days without economical troubles was also the objective of the paddy farming.
To farm four crops-Aman paddy, potato or mustard, Mungbean and pariza paddy systematically on a land in year avoiding highly cost boro cultivation in a bid to adapt to the changed climatic condition was another objective of the paddy farming.
This year, a total of 4,080 bighas of land owned by 4,080 farmers of Sundarganj, Palashbari and Sadar upazila were brought under the pariza paddy farming while only 50 bighas of land were cultivated the variety in 2009.
Of the total, some 3,000 bighas were brought under the farming in Sundarganj upazila, 1,050 in Sadar upazila and 30 in Palashbari upazila in the district, said Saiful Islam, assistant agriculture officer of RDRS Bangladesh. Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension Mir Abdur Razzak said generally, after the completing the harvest of early variety Boro paddy in April the land remained fully fallow for about three months at a stretch till starting T-Aman paddy farming at the end of July.
