Peanut farming gaining popularity in Naogaon

NAOGAON, May 13: Farmers of Raninagar upazila in the district are expecting a bumper peanut output this season.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source said farmers of the area have expanded peanut cultivation this season as they had made a good profit last year.
The department provides all necessary support to growers in this connection, DAE officials added.
Cultivators can grow over 2.5 tonnes of peanut on one acre of land if weather condition remains favourable.
Each maund of peanut is being sold at Tk 4,000 to Tk 4,500.
"I have cultivated the crop on 25 decimals of land spending Tk 5,000 and expecting to make a profit of over Tk 20,000," said farmer Anisul Islam of Raninagar upazila.
Sources said peanut farming generally starts from December, after completing T-Aman harvest. Farmers start harvesting the crop from June.
For a bigha of peanut land, cultivators need a bag of TSP, half bag of Potash and a bag urea fartilisers along with organic fartiliser. Besides, they need to spay pesticide minimum three times to get a fresh yield.
Upazila agriculture officer SM Golam Sarwar said peanut farming process is easy. It is a Khrif crop. More than 70 hectares of land have been brought under groundnut cultivation this season.
