RANGPUR, Jan 27: Farming of different varieties of crops is changing the socio-economic condition of the people living in char (shoal) areas in Rangpur division in recent years.

Sources said, once crop cultivation did not prove successful in the sandy char areas under the region, consequently huge amount of char land remained fallow.

But subsequently, due to the blessings of modern technology peasants became able to achieve success in growing various crops in the char areas, sources said.

A good number of crops including wheat, pumpkin, peanut, maize, sugarcane, tobacco, chilli, garlic, onion etc are being grown plentifully in the char areas of the region, making the growers financially solvent.

This year peasants of the char areas in different districts including Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha and Lamonirhat under the division geared up the farming of crops.

Abul Hossain, a peasant of Char Mahipur village in Gangachara upazila in the district said earlier, they could not succeed in crop farming in char areas but gradually with the introduction of modern technology they became able to cultivate crops abundantly and earned good profit.

He said that he prefers farming maize due to high profit in comparison with paddy.

Peasants said earlier, they faced difficulty to maintain their impoverished families with their petty income but now they have become able to overcome poverty and are changing their financial condition through cultivating crops on fallow char lands.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, thousands of farmers are engaged in crop cultivation on the sandy char lands and thus are getting financially benefited.

The department is providing the growers with adequate assistances in this regard, sources added.
