PABNA, Jan 01: A female entrepreneur in Ishwardi of Pabna has highly benefited from raising a new breed of Pekin ducks.
Farhana Akhter Chhobi, daughter of late Fazlur Rahman of Digripara-Kalikapur village, has become self-reliant in a short time by raising the ducks.
Now, many unemployed men and women of the area have become interested in rearing ducks.
Farhana, a diploma holder in agriculture, started rearing the ducks in collaboration with non-government organisations (NGOs).
She set up the duck farm in collaboration with the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) PKSP) and Jagrani Chakra Foundation.
At first, she bought 200 Pekin ducklings at a cost of Tk 19,000. The costs of food and medicine for the ducklings are about Tk 70,000.
Now, each duck in her cage weighs 3 to 4 kg. The duck is selling at Tk 260 to Tk 270 per kg in the market.
Farhana has sold the ducks for Tk 120,000. She has made a profit of Tk. 50,000. She is very happy to make such a profit in a short time (45 days).
The female entrepreneur told The Financial Express that many people in the area have expressed interest in raising this duck.
"I think that raising ducks is very profitable," Farhana said, advising the unemployed youths to rear ducks.
Dr Md Maidul Islam, animal resources officer in Pabna district, told The FE, "Rearing Pekin ducks is very profitable. Farhana earned a profit of Tk 70,000 in just 45 days."
The Jagarani Chakra Foundation told The FE that they are working tirelessly for socio-economic development.
Many people have become self-sufficient by farming ducks, poultry, cattle and fish, it said.
