RANGPUR, Apr 27: The people of different char areas under Rangpur district are deprived of proper nutrition, medicare and education facilities consequently they are passing days in acute misery.
Due to river erosion they become landless each year as rivers devour their houses and cultivable lands, sources said.
According to a statistics about 70 per cent people living in the char areas suffer from a number of diseases due to lack of adequate health services. They also suffer from malnutrition.
The reasons of their malnutrition are deficiency of a balanced diet and dearth of pure drinking water.
Moreover, the children of the char areas are being deprived of education due to lack sufficient of educational institutions in the areas. Most of them are compelled to engage themselves in income generating activities instead of going to school owing to poverty, sources said.
According to sources about 35 to 40 percent children of the remote char areas of the district are not going to school though the government has declared primary education compulsory and tuition fees free. Due to extreme poverty many parents in the char areas do not want their children to go to schools rather they send their children to work for supplementing their impoverished families.
Every child labourers has been maintaining family with their poor income. Mominur (9) works at a tea stall at Ekota Bazar area at char Nazirdaho village under Kawnia upazila told The Financial Express that he was admitted to school but after some days he had stopped going to school and began to work at a tea stall. He said extreme poverty forced him to give up school despite his earnest desire for going to school, he added.
Children in char areas are found engaged in various works like working in the crop lands, working at tea stalls, some are working as shepherd of grazing cattle, some others engaged in construction works and some are working as hawker.
