CHUADANGA, Jun 18: The poor, middle class and low-income people of Chuadanga are in great difficulties as the price of essentials has soared ahead of Holy month of Ramadan in the district though there are ample supply of essential goods in the market.
While visiting the market this correspondent found that BR-11 rice is being sold at Tk 35 per kg against Tk 32, BR-28 rice at Tk 36 against Tk 33, while price of other coarse rice is increased by Tk 2 to Tk 3 per kg. Sugar is being sold at Tk 48 against Tk 44 per kg, onion at Tk 30 against Tk 25, garlic at Tk 80 against Tk 70, Daruchini at Tk 300 against Tk 200 per kg, brinjal is being sold at Tk 40 against Tk 30. Besides, all vegetables items is being sold at Tk 5 to Tk 10 in extra price only a week ago.
DAE office sources said the production target of Boro paddy and vegetables has been achieved in the district.
However the wholesalers of rice and grocery shops in Chuadanga Kaderganj bazar Shamsher Ali and Abdus Salam claimed that the prices of essentials have been raised due to political instability.
Huge jute production expected
A BSS report from Chuadanga says: Chuadanga District Agriculture Extension (DAE) Department has fixed the target to cultivate jute on 20,440 hectares of land in the current season.
Of the total land, 3,200 hectares of land will be brought under jute cultivated in Chuadanga sadar upazila, 8,000 hectares in Alamdanga upazila, 7,240 hectares in Damurhuda upazila and jute will be cultivated on 2,000 hectares of land in Jibonagar upazila.
DAE source said 73,580 metric tons of jute is expected to be produced in the district if climate remains favourable.
District Agriculture Extension Department has ensured smooth supply of fertilizer, seeds and insecticide at fair price to make the jute cultivation successful in the district in the present season.
