NILPHAMARI, Jan 30: Pepper cultivation is going on across the six upazilas of the district. Farmers plant pepper saplings in high and semi-highland to start harvesting the crop before the advent of the rainy season.
It requires two times irrigation. More than 8,000 saplings may be planted on 30 decimals of land and around 50 maunds of pepper can be harvested from there.
DAE sources said 3,562 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the spicy crop with the production target of 4,460 tonnes.
Sources said Nilphamari is well known for producing quality pepper. At present pepper is being sold at Tk 80 per kg in the local market of the district.
Farmer Abdur Rahman of Itakhola union under Sadar upazila said he is growing pepper on 30 decimals of land with an expectation to get 60 maunds of output. He said he would be able to make a profit of Tk 0.1 million this season.
