RANGPUR, May 7: Although the farmers of Rangpur division became ecstatic to witness an excellent yield of Boro paddy during the current season, their ecstasy faded away making them melancholic when they found its price plummeting in markets.
The peasants of eight districts under the division cultivated Boro with great zeal and optimism this season but their hope of having fair price was nipped in the bud. Presently Boro is selling at much lower rate even below the production cost as result growers have become disheartened. Department of Agriculture sources said Boro was cultivated on about 7, 75,360 hectares of land eight district under the division this season. Harvesting of the crop is going on in the region but due to its low price in local haats and bazars the growers who have already dogged by different ordeals including high input prices are not able to recover the expenditure from the yield. As the price of the crop is lower, middlemen and hoarders are purchasing it from different markets to stock.
Sources said that this season the production cost of Boro paddy increased several times than the previous years due to the price-hike of pesticides, labour cost and other inputs.
Growers are counting huge losses as Boro is now being sold at Tk 420 to Tk 450 per maund whereas the production cost of per maund paddy was Tk 600 to Tk 650, farmers alleged.
Azizar Rahman, a boro cultivator at Dangapara village under Taragang upazila in Rangpur district expressed his dissatisfaction saying that he cultivated Boro on 6 bighas of land this year spending additional money for irrigation, pesticides and other inputs. But now he has to incur massive loss because of falling price of the crop.
