JAMALPUR, Sept 11 (BSS): As the flood water dropping continuously the overall flood situations further improved in the district.
Water Development Board said, Jamuna dropped 15 cm during the last 24 hours and was flowing 138 cm below the red mark at Bahadurabad ghat point today at 12 noon.
District administration sources said, flood damaged some 593 kilometers roads partially or completely in the district. Of the roads 520 kilometers earthen roads and 73 kilometers carpeted roads.
On the other hand, the flood water damaged 278 primary schools in the district that losses of Tk 22 million, District Primary Education Official said.
Besides, 137 educational institutes of them 76 school and colleges, 55 Madrasa and 6 technical colleges, were also partially damaged.
Some 109.42 metric tonnes of fishes worth about Tk 13.8 million and 5.83 million fish fries worth of Tk 12.9 million were washed away by the flood water, the fisheries department sources said. Agriculture Department said, some 20 per cent of standing crops were damaged by the flood in the district.
A total of 2,51,764 farmers in seven upazilas of the district were affected by the flood.
Aus, T-Aman seed beds, T-Aman, jute, vegetable, sugarcane, and green chili on 33,515 hectares of land were damaged by the flood.
Deputy Director of DAE M Abul Kashem said after receding flood water farmers are planting local varieties paddy in their damaged field and they could plant local variety paddy till September 15.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Office sources said over 0.5 million people in 54 unions in all the seven upazilas in the district were affected by the floods.
Civil Surgeon Dr Mohammad Hafizur Rahman said, medical teams are working in the affected areas round the clock. Dried foods and other essential materials worth about Tk 23,70, 000 and 590 metric tonnes of rice were distributed among the flood victims.
