TANGAIL, Jan 31: Potato growers of 12 upazilas of the district delighted over abundant production of the product and satisfactory market price in the current season.
According to Department of Agriculture extension (DAE), Tangail sources, farmers of the district cultivated around 4,050 hectares of land this season in the 12 upazilas with the production target, 81000 tonnes of potato.
Farmer sources said harvesting of potato is going on in full swing in the different areas of the district and its growers are earning a handsome profit by selling their produce.
Potato of some upazilas of the district are very famous in the area especially of Delduar and Bhuapur upazilas. That area's potato has different colour and taste, Alom Miah, a potato trader informed.
Previous experience of potato growers was not so good because before last couple of years the market price was so poor in the peak harvesting period. But in the current year till Saturday, price was satisfactory, market sources said.
Traders from different neighbouring districts and upazilas are coming to the district everyday to buy vegetables from this big wholesale market of the district, a wholesaler of Park Moydan Bazaar said.
Each maund of local variety of potato is being sold at Tk 700 to Tk 800, cardinal variety at Tk 700 to Tk 750, diamond variety at Tk 600 to Tk 650 and jam variety at Tk 600 to 700 in the different kitchen market across the district.
Abdur Rashid Miah, son of Hanif Miah of village Rupshi Baljan under Delduar upazila of the district told to The Financial Express that he cultivated potato on his 55 decimal of land in the current season. He has already earned about Tk 18,000 by selling his produce and he is expecting to earn more profit from his remaining produce, if the price remains same as before.
Sub assistant Shariful Islam of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail sources said vegetables cultivation is on the rise as farmers of char areas of the district are producing a huge quantity of different type of vegetables.
