Potato harvest starts in Bogra

BOGRA, Feb 04: Potato growers of the district have started harvesting the item. The peasants are now passing busy time in harvesting and processing the crop as they will bring the same land under Boro cultivation.
Each maund of fresh Fata Pakri potato is being sold at Tk 750 to Tk 800, Tel Pakri at Tk 600 to Tk 650, Cardinal at Tk 700 to Tk 730, Diamond at Tk 600 to Tk 650 and Jam at Tk 670 to Tk 700 in the kitchen market across the district.
Traders from the adjacent districts are now visiting the area to purchase the newly-harvested potatoes from the farmers directly.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) set a target to bring some 5,8560 hectares of land under potato cultivation in the district this season to produce over 13,84,000 tonnes of fresh yield.
DAE sources said growers of Dupchanchia, Kahaloo, Adamdighi, Shibganj, Sonatola, Sariakandi, Gabtoly, Dhunot, Shajahanpur Sheherpur, and Nandigram and Sadar upazilas of the district have already harvested potatoes of 10,000 hectares of land.
"I have cultivated potato on 54 decimals of land spending Tk 23,000 and got some 120 maunds of the yield, said farmer Anarul Islam of Domorgram village under Kahaloo upazila. He said, "We got a satisfactory production this season."
Sub-assistance agriculture officer Faridur Rahman said, "We are working to make the farming programme a success. Growers are also delighted over the market price."
