Potato preservation in cold storages begins in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Mar 16: Preservation of potatoes in cold storages has started in Nilphamari district. Both the growers and the stockists are preserving the vegetable in the cold storages. There are nine cold storages in the district and the total storage capacity of these cold stores is 58,500 MTs. When contacted, Md. Selim, owner of Ankur Seed Himagar Ltd of Bismuri Chanderhat area of Sadar Upazilla said his cold storage has a capacity to store 15000 MTs and in the meantime 5000 MTs of potatoes have been stored and the process is going on. He also mentioned that preservation cost of potato is 350 taka per sack (85 kg). Sources concerned said there prevails a shortage of cold storages in the district and more cold storages are needed to meet the local need.

On the other hand, harvesting of potato in the district is in the middle stage and it will be completed very soon. This year production of potato in the district is very satisfactory and the wholesale price of per sack is nearly Tk 800 to Tk 850. DAE sources said the target of potato cultivation was set at 18867 hectares with a production target of 370947 MTs this year and the production is likely to surpass the target.
