RANGPUR, Feb 19: Poultry growers of Rangpur district are in serious problem as they are incurring huge financial losses owing to price hike of poultry feed and medicine in recent times. The situation has further aggravated due to prolonged blockade and shutdown enforced by BNP led 20 party alliance.
It is claimed that the prices of poultry feed, medicine and other inputs have marked a sharp rise recently and on the other hand the price of egg and matured chickens decreased. As a result the poultry industry is suffering huge losses. A number of poultry farms have already been closed and many are on the verge of closure, sources further said.
Sources informed that the prices of all kinds of poultry feed including maize, protein, soyabean are much higher. Presently per sack (50kg) of maize is being sold at Tk 1100 to Tk 1200 while it was Tk 800 to Tk 900 previously. Per sack soyabean is sold at Tk 2200 to Tk 2250 against its previous price of Tk 1850 to Tk 1900 before. Protein per sack (25 Kg) is sold at Tk 2200 to Tk 2300 while it was 1800 to Tk 1900.
Imrul, a big poultry grower of Balua area under Mithapukur upazila told The Financial Express that he is struggling hard in running their business on account of political turmoil which is hampering their business. Due to price spiral of feed, medicine the maintenance costs have also gone up, he said.
Monsur, another poutry farm owner of Khanshama village under kawnia upazila told FE that he is facing serious problem in running their business amid blockade and shutdown. If the situation continues he will have to close his farm, he apprehended.
Mahbubul Islam, president of District Poultry Farm Owners' Association told The Financial Express that it is not possible for them to run their business in this adverse situation caused by frequent blockade and shutdown. Due to price hike of poultry feed and medicine their business is facing a serious setback.
He also said they have to spend huge amount of money to buy medicine for poultry which is seriously hindering their business. Scores of poultry farms were closed recently in the district because of price hike of poultry feed medicine and prolonged political turmoil. The others are running amidst huge difficulty.
The farm owners are losing their capitals everyday and turning jobless, he added. He urged all the political parties to give up such tough political programme and ensure a business friendly environment.
