SYLHET, July 27: Despite good yield this summer, prices of vegetables have increased in Sylhet -- along with some other items of the kitchen market, locals and farmers said.
On a visit to kitchen markets in Sylhet city's Subidbazar, Ambarkhana, Rikabibazar, and other areas, this correspondent found most vegetables are being sold at increased prices while the prices of chicken and hilsha fish have also gone up. The prices of broiler and Sonali chicken have increased by Tk 10 per kg in the past few weeks.
Traders claim supply has not been normal for weeks while buyers complain that some traders have been charging extra prices on the pretext of supply crisis.
Among the vegetables, bitter gourd is being sold at Tk 100-120 per kg and green chilli at Tk 400-500 per kg. Snake gourd, pointed gourd and long bean are being sold at Tk 80 per kg each, while taro root and taro stolons are being sold at Tk 80-100 per kg each. Depending on the quality, brinjals are being sold at Tk 70 to 90. Besides, tomatoes are being sold at Tk 70-80, radishes at Tk 60, cauliflower at Tk 70-80 and cabbage at Tk 50.
Meanwhile, papaya and sweet pumpkin are being sold at Tk 60 each while hybrid and local varities of cucumbers are being sold at Tk 80 and Tk 100 respectively.
Lemons, on the other hand, are being sold at Tk 30-50 per four pieces; green bananas at Tk 150 per dozen. Local and hybrid varities of corianders are being sold at Tk 150-180 per kg each and capsicum is being sold at Tk 200-300 per kg.
Red cabbage is being sold at Tk 20, while Tk 40 is being asked for gourd cabbage.
Among the daily necessities, potato is being sold at Tk 30 and local onions at Tk 50-60 per kg.
Moreover, Sonali chicken is being sold at Tk 320-330 per kg, Sonali hybrid at Tk 300 and broiler chicken at Tk 155. Besides, red layer chicken is being sold at Tk 370 and local chicken at Tk 500 per kg. In the fish market, a kg of hilsa, which weighs 400 grams per piece, is being sold at Tk 1,500. The asking price of hilsa weighing 500-700 grams is at Tk 2,000-2,200 per kg. In addition, rui fish is being sold at Tk 400-450, mrigal at Tk 350-450, pangas at Tk 180-200 and tilapia at Tk 200.
Furthermore, shrimp is being sold at Tk 1,000-1,400 per kg and local magur at Tk 800-1,000 per kg.
