RANGPUR, Feb 17: Pumpkin growers of different char areas under the district are optimistic about an excellent production of their produce this season.
Earlier, a vast tract of char lands remained uncultivated over the years but the scenario has changed now with the introduction of modern technology.
Presently, the farmers are getting able to grow crops even on fallow char lands using latest technology. Different varieties of crops including pumpkin are being grown plentifully in the char areas of the region.
While visiting some areas across the district it was found the farmers busy nurturing their pumpkin fields with enthusiasm.
Ataur, a farmer at Char Thakurdas village under Kawnia upazila, said he cultivated pumpkin on 40 decimals of land during this season and the condition of its growth is satisfactory. Smooth supply of water and agri-inputs such as fertilisers and pesticides has boosted its cultivation, he also said.
Amjad Hossain, another farmer at Char Mahipur village under Gangachara upazila said he has been growing pumpkin on char lands for the last few years. This season he has cultivated the vegetable on 30 decimals of his land and is expecting high yield and good profit from its sale.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources said thousands of farmers of the region are engaged in different crops cultivation including pumpkin on the sandy lands and earning good profit.
Crop farming on sandy char lands is playing an important role in mitigating poverty of the extreme people living in char areas in the region. DAE is also helping the growers with necessary assistances in this regard, sources added.
