RANGPUR, Oct 05: Incessant rainfall during last one week has made the early winter vegetable cultivators in Rangpur division apprehensive about the yield of their produces this year.

According to sources, farming of early winter vegetables has been facing serious setback in the division due to frequent rainfall which caused massive damage to the vegetable fields.

Expressing disappointment a good number of peasants said that this year they made vigorous effort to cultivate early winter vegetables with the hope of making handsome profit but ceaseless rain for about one week shattered their hopes.

The growers suffered loss as they failed to drain out the water due to frequent rainfall, they added.

Hanif Mia, a vegetable grower of Char Thakurdas village under Kawnia upazila in Rangpur district, said he sowed some 900 saplings of cauliflowers spending around Tk 9,000 but almost all the seedlings were damaged due to water logging caused by frequent rain, he also said.

Saidur, another peasant at Putimari village of Kishoreganj upazila in Nilphamari district said he has been cultivating early variety of potato for the last five years and earning good profit.

Encouraged by previous years' success he sowed seeds of potato on his one bigha of land this year. But around 80 per cent of his potato field perished due to water logging condition which occurred by continuous downpour, he added.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources rain is good for farming of vegetable as well as other crops. But incessant rain can cause harm to vegetables especially during sowing season.

Prolonged water logging in many fields of early winter vegetables caused by ceaseless rain during last one week badly affected the vegetable fields in different areas under the region. Growers should follow the advices of the agricultural officials to minimise damage caused by rain, sources added.
