RAJSHAHI, July 15: Over one hundred daily wage-based workers of ten silk farms of Rajshahi under Bangladesh Sericulture Development Board (BSDB) have not been paid since May this year.
Although the Eid-ul- Fitr is knocking at the door, the board is in no hurry to pay the workers. So the sericulture workers are living with uncertainty in celebrating the Eid festival.
"For last two months, we have not been paid our wages. We met director general of the board Anisul Haque Bhuiya on July 12 at his office where he assured us of our payment of wages, but we are still remained unpaid," some workers alleged.
Earlier on July 12, hundred of workers staged demonstration and observed a stay-in strike in front of the board office from 10.00am to 2.00pm demanding their wages.
In their speech, workers alleged that board director general Anisul Haque Bhuiya has received the payment budget and the Extension Department of the Board has also recommended for the payment of wages through notice. Nevertheless, the director general is dilly-dallying to pay the dues.
BSDB president Abu Selim said the payment of the workers was proposed from the approved budget and the matter was produced before the board meeting too. But board director is silent regarding the issue for unknown reason.
Contacted, Mr. Bhuiya told that the problem has occurred as the Board did not get the budget early in the fiscal year. "We are trying our best to pay the workers and hope, the payment would be completed very soon," he added. ritushar.ru@gmail.com
