Rajshahi WASA takes steps to construct water purification plant

RAJSHAHI, Mar 23: Rajshahi Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has taken up an initiative to construct a water purification plant at a cost of Tk 4 billion (400 crore) in Rajshahi district with the financial assistance of Chinese government.
The outline of the proposed water purification plant was announced through an exchange of view meeting at a local hotel recently.
Presided over by Dhirendra Nath Sarker, Managing Director of Rajshahi WASA, the meeting was attended and addressed, among others, by A.H.M Khairuzzaman Liton, Former Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation, Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Rajshahi University, Professor Iqbal Matin, Dean of Engineering Faculty of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology and Azhar Ali, Chief Executive Officer of Rajshah City Corporation.
Dhirendra Nath Sarker, Managing Director of Rajshahi WASA mentioned at his welcome speech that former Mayor A.H.M. Khairuzzaman Liton had planned for this project in the year of 2011 when the WASA, Rajshahi, wasn't even founded. He had asked for assistance from the Government of China. As a result, the Chinese government has made a positive response for implementation of the project.
In this connection he also informed, water of the river Padma will be purified and then supplied to the city dwellers through pipe lines under this project. It has been primarily decided that the water purification plant will be established in Forhadpur of Godagari upazila. Apart from this, river sides at Haripur of Paba Upazila and Yosufpur of Charghat Upazila have also been chosen as alternative places where water flow of the river Padma remained almost the same round the year.
Dhirendra Nath Sarker again said, the purified water will be supplied in Rajshahi City Corporation area including at Katakhali, Godagari Municipal area and in surrounding 11 unions and if the plant is established in Godagari, several drought prone unions of Godagari will also be taken under coverage.
