RAJSHAHI, Mar 27 (BSS): Special credit programme of the Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) for boosting fish production has been gaining popularity in the country's northwest region over the last decade.
The bank has been operating the programme styled 'RAKUB fisheries village' for extensive fish cultivation to create employment opportunities along with fulfilling protein deficiency in the region.
The main objective of the programme is to encourage small farmers in fish farming so that they could produce more fish in the small ponds and other water-bodies using modern and scientific technologies instead of traditional ones.
The programme gives emphasis on forming fisheries village with at least 10-12 small ponds and other water bodies at potential places.
As an effort to furthermore encourage the fish farming, the RAKUB arranged a fish farmers and clients gathering in Daukandi area under Durgapur upazila in the district on Monday.
Chairman of the bank Nazrul Islam and Managing Director Kazi Alamgir addressed the meeting as the chief and special guests respectively with General Manager Rafiqul Alam Chowdhury in the chair.
Zonal Manager Rafiqul Islam, Branch Manager Ashraful Awal and Upazila Fisheries Officer Abul Kalam Azad also spoke.
On the occasion, six fish farmers and three depositors were accorded reception through giving crests as recognition to their laudable contribution to this field.
Nazrul Islam said there was a bright prospect for increasing fish production in all the northern districts with optimum use of the existing natural resources.
The programme has a provision of sanctioning loan up to Tk 0.5 million in different potential and prospective fields.
The farmers having experience of fish farming and at least four-week training programme on improved fish cultivation are being given preference to get the loan.
