Rangpur dist admin takes programmes to observe Rokeya Day today


RANGPUR, Dec 08: The district administration has taken various programmes to observe Rokeya Day 2018 (birth and death anniversaries of Begum Rokeya tomorrow (December 9) in a befitting manner.
The programes will begin through placing of floral wreaths at Begum Rokeya Smriti Stambha at her birthplace of Pairaband under Mithapukur upazila in the district.
The programmes also include Milad Mahfil at Pairaband Jam-e-Mosque, discussions on contributions of Begum Rokeya to the women movements and her life, voluntary blood donation, drawing competition, essay competition and cultural programmes in Pairaband village.
Besides, Begum Rokeya University Rangpur and several socio-cultural organisations will also observe the day through various programmes.
Begum Rokeya, a pioneer of women renaissance in the sub-continent, was born in Pairaband on December 09, 1880 and died on the same day in 1932 in Kolkata.
The birth and death anniversaries of the pioneer of women renaissance in the sub-continent have been officially being observed as Rokeya Day since 1994 at her village.
Begum Rokeya had to struggle a lot to establish women rights, freedom, education, empowerment and economic emancipation during her lifetime. She was the first woman who learnt Bengali and English with the help of her brother Ibrahim Saber.
After her marriage to Khan Bahadur Sakhawat Hossain, she moved to Bhagalpur in India. She was encouraged by her husband and began writing.
A good number of her books played a significant role in the history of Bengali literature.
