RANGPUR, Mar 9: The farmers of Rangpur region are expecting an excellent yield of wheat during the current season due to congenial weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-inputs.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, wheat has been cultivated on 28,053 hectares of land in five districts under Rangpur agriculture region this season against the target of 24,283 hectares with the production target of 75,278 metric tonnes.
The districts are Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat. Farmers are quite hopeful about attaining a bumper production of their produce if the weather remains favourable, sources informed.
While visiting different areas under the region this correspondent found wheat plants grown superbly predicting a good yield of the crop.
DAE sources said the farmers have shown their eagerness in the cultivation of the crop in recent years as they are achieving a good output and fair prices consecutively owing to favourable weather conditions.
Lower price of paddy also made farmers interested in wheat cultivation and as a result, wheat cultivation exceeded the target this year, sources said.
Lal Mia (48), a farmer at Ganarpara village under Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur district told The Financial Express that he cultivated wheat on two acres of land this season and he is much delighted to witness excellent growth of wheat plants. Adequate water supply, agri-inputs and congenial weather made it possible, he further said.
Sirajul (50), another wheat cultivator of Khansama village under Kawnia upazila under Rangpur told the FE that Tk 1,300 to Tk 1,600 is required to cultivate the crop on one bigha of land. He cultivated the crop on two bighas of land this year and is optimistic of getting a bumper production, he said. Smooth supply of water and agri-inputs such as fertilisers and pesticides enhanced its cultivation, he also said.
Additional Director of DAE, Rangpur, Prodip Kumar Mandol said wheat cultivation has exceeded target in the region this year as the farmers showed much interest in its cultivation.
