RANGPUR, Aug 27: Farmers of Rangpur division are optimistic of achieving a good yield of Aman paddy this season as sufficient rainfall for the last couple of week has brought relief to them after a prolonged drought like situation.
They are now passing busy days in nurturing the matured seedlings of paddy plants on the fields in the hope of getting desired yield of the crop during the current season.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) official sources, T-Aman was cultivated on some 10,46,900 hectares of land in 8 districts under Rangpur division during the current season. But due to insufficient rainfall during the peak period of Aman cultivation only the solvent farmers of the region were able to depend on shallow pumps and deep tube-wells to irrigate their lands but the small and marginal farmers could not afford it as it was very expensive.
During that time the cultivation of T-Aman paddy was seriously hindered due to drought like situation. But the recent rainfall changed the scene and helped the farmers become hopeful again about achieving the target.
Hossain Ali (50), a farmer of Ikorchali area under Taraganj upazila in the district told The Financial Express, he began Aman cultivation this year with the hope to recoup the loss of last year but all his hope got shattered in the mid-way due to the drought like situation. Now he is happy as recent rainfall made him optimistic again of achieving the target, he further said.
Saiful Islam (55), another farmer of Fulchouki village at under Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur district said they were worried fearing complete loss to their crop due to prolonged drought but they could overcome the problem as the district witnessed adequate rainfall over the last one week.
Deputy Director of DAE Rangpur Zulfikar Ali said T-Aman plants are growing excellently in the fields everywhere promising a bumper yield of the crop this year as the climatic condition has become conducive now.
The farmers are hopeful about harvesting the early, short duration T-Aman paddies like BINA 7, BRRI dhan 33, BRRI dhan 39, BRRI dhan 56 and BU dhan 1 from the first week of October next, he added.
