Rangpur farmers poised for a good yield of potato

RANGPUR, Dec 4: The cultivators of early variety of potato in Rangpur division are optimistic of attaining a good yield during the current season as a congenial weather condition has been prevailing in the region.  

With the hope to earn additional profit the potato growers in the division did not delay and began sowing potato seeds with much enthusiasm just after the harvest of early varieties of Aman paddy.

Harvesting of early variety of potato has already begun in few areas of the region and it is expected to get momentum within one month. The growers are delighted as they are getting fair price of their produce.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) of Rangpur sources, DAE has set a target to bring 1,73,000 hectares of land in 8 districts under potato cultivation in Rangpur division this season and the farmers are expecting a bumper production of the crop.

Anisur Rahman (50), a farmer of Santospur village under Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur district told The Financial Express, "This year I have cultivated the crop on one acre of land and am expecting handsome profit from the produce", he further said.

Matiar (48), a Potato cultivator of Char Nazirdoho village under Kawnia upazila in Rangpur said that he has been cultivating early variety of potato for the last several years and earning excellent profit which is encouraging for others. Seeing his success many other farmers of his surrounding areas have become interested in its cultivation on their lands, he added.

Deputy Director of DAE Rangpur, Zulfikar Haidar said farmers are getting more profit by cultivating early variety of potato. As a result the cultivation of the crop is increasing day by day in the region. DAE is also providing necessary supports to the growers to boost up its cultivation, he added.
