RANGPUR, Jan 12: The turmeric growers at Taraganj Upazila in the district are jubilant as they are making handsome profit by cultivating the spicy crop on their lands this season.
Farmers who once used to grow paddy in their fields are now cultivating turmeric as the cultivation of the crop has become more lucrative than other crops, sources said.
Disappointed over low price of paddy during last few years, a number of farmers of the Upazila started the cultivation of turmeric with new zeal and optimism this season. This time their efforts proved successful. The farmers of the upazila have attained a good harvest and satisfactory price of the crop.
Mobarak Hossain (50), a farmer of Ghanirampur village under the upazila told The Financial Express, "I cultivated turmeric on my farmlands this season instead of paddy as the lower price of the paddy disheartened me last season." He said, "I made about Tk 38,000 net profit by cultivating turmeric on one acre of land whereas I could earn only Tk 12,000 to Tk 14,000 profit if I cultivated paddy."
Witnessing his success many other farmers of his village and adjacent villages have shown interest in its cultivation on their homesteads and farmlands, he added.
Nurunnabi, another farmer of Uttorpara village under the upazila said last season he had to spend around Tk 7,000 to cultivate paddy of one bigha of land. But he earned a profit of only Tk 9,000 by selling the crop. Being frustrated over the low price of paddy he cultivated turmeric on the same land this season and already earned Tk 22,000 as profit.
Upazila DAE officer Rezaul Karim said cultivation of turmeric has increased in recent times in the Upazila due to its good profit and lower production cost compared to other crops. The highlands of many areas in the Upazila are suitable for turmeric cultivation. A number of farmers at different areas under the upazila have cultivated the spicy crop this season instead of paddy and tobacco.
Some 1,000 acres of land were brought under its cultivation in the upazila during the current season, he added.
